Chills & Thrills!

Image
With holiday break finally coming up soon, many of us students are going to have a lot of free time on our hands until school begins again. A stark difference from the constant business of college life that us students deal with over the school year. However, other than spending any of the holidays that transpire during this season with family; What other things could be done during this time? You could start reading those books that you didn't have the time or energy to read before. Or you could learn a new hobby that you have never done before. Maybe even continue performing hobbies that you started prior to. Leisurely activities such as learning a new language, cooking, baking, sewing, and so much more. I, personally, want to get back into sewing and reading with my new found free-time. I haven't really sewed since before school started and I have so many ideas that I would love to execute. There are also some books that I began reading before the beginning of the year, but ...

A Time for Holiday Traditions

From decorating pine trees to gift giving, there are a multitude of traditions that people generally act upon during this time of the year. Plenty of them having their beginnings in the pagan celebration of Yule that would take place centuries ago. My family enjoys celebrating things, and Christmas is no exception. We embark on many traditions both from the general society and of our own. One tradition of ours that we do is buying Christmasy pajamas and save them to be worn on Christmas Eve and Christmas. As far as I know they're ins't a specific story as to how it started, but we do it none the less every year. Another Christmas tradition that I used to do when I was little, was make "reindeer mix" and spread it out in front of our house with my grandma. We would spread the mix out all over the driveway and I would always get so excited Christmas morning when I went outsid...

All I Want for Christmas is its History!

Image
♡₊˚ 🦒・₊✧ Christmas is, personally, my favorite holiday, and with it coming up, I thought it would be nice to look into its history and how it came to be. Originally, before christianity took over the holiday; creating it into what it is known as now; it was called Yule by pagans and was known to be a celebration of the winter solstice. Although Yule has been transformed a lot over the centuries, many of the traditions  have transitioned themselves into Christmas traditions that we take part in now. Pagans would use the wood of specific trees to light a bonfire, made to ward off the darkness and welcome the return of the sun, as well as ensure warmth. This is what we now call the "Yule log". Evergreen trees were put in homes and decorated with food, runes, statues, and strips of cloth. There also may or may not have been human sacrifices for the atonement of humans and their misdeeds. After christianity became established as a religion, christians traveled to Northern Europe ...

Rational Argument: Ideas and Process

Image
πŸ— ☕ πŸ•° πŸ“œ 🎞 πŸ–‹️ Our next essay we will be writing a rational argument. From what I understand it is supposed to be like an expansion on the micro theme. Where in micro themes it was purely speculation, these rational arguments will have evidence to back it up. We need to pick a question to base our rational argument off of and then find evidence to base it off of that argument. So far, I have come up with two possible ideas for what my rational argument may be about. The first one is about people's perceptions of Chicago. Tourists from outside of the Chicagoland area often think of Chicago to be a very dangerous place, but is this really true? Is Chicago any more dangerous than other popular cities like New York or Detroit? For this idea, I would have to look into crime rates in Chicago as well as these other well-known areas. I would also possibly look into the rates at which crime in Chicago is being covered in the news compared to the other places. My next possible idea for wh...

The Rape of Proserpina

Image
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧   ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ This image shows a statue created by medieval Roman artist Bernini; called The Rape of Proserpina . Based on a hymn to Demeter by Homer; A story about Demeter experiencing the loss of her daughter, Persephone, as she is taken from her by Ruler of the Underworld, Hades. Hades, tricking Persephone with a flower that she plucked from the ground making it crumble underneath her, whisks her off in his chariot, taking her to be his bride. This statue shows a point in the story where Hades captures Persephone from her in the meadow. I enjoy looking at Bernini's work, one that I like in particular is based on the myth of Apollo and Daphne. His work is quite beautiful and a lot of it often looks so realistic with all of the details that he takes into account. However, in the case of this piece of work, his attention to detail and realism, I feel, makes this statue almost scary.  Displayed on Persephone's face is sheer fear as she tries to use her hands to push H...

Think Pink!!!

Image
I am a very indecisive person. Often times, having a hard time choosing favorites of things, such as color. Even though I don't have a favorite color, I feel like there is no denying how good of a color pink is. Pink is pretty in all its shades. It can go with any other color flawlessly. On clothes, in rooms, or even with cars, pink is a beautiful and show stopping color.  Some may feel that pink is a girly, and therefore inferior color to others, but I like to think otherwise. Partly because I feel like just because you like a different color, doesn't mean you have to put down other colors. Also because it makes me upset that many things that girls grow up doing, liking, or are pushed onto them are frequently seen automatically as lesser than anything that is seen as masculine. I feel like it is also important to mention that pink used to be seen as a masculine color as it derived from red. Red being acquainted with rage, power, royalty, etc. and worn by men because of that,...

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Image
I can't wait for Halloween to come up. I'm trying to figure out what my costume may be; I'm thinking either a princess or the queen of the fairies, like Titania. The princess costume doesn't come from anything specific, however Titania comes from a play by Shakespeare's called A Midsummer Night's Dream. One of which I would love to see in a theater if ever possible. Set in a forest, the vibes of the play is very mystical and magical. And every time I see the costumes from plays, movies, ballet performances, etc. they always look so beautiful. You can probably tell from past blog posts, but I enjoy things that make me feel like they aren't real and look like they could be from a fairy tale. Things that seem magical make me feel good, where everything else around me often makes me feel stressed or overwhelmed. There are many different examples of things or stories that make me feel magical, no just this one. For instance, Alice in Wonderland, Grimm's fairy...
