The Rape of Proserpina

Image
✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧   ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ This image shows a statue created by medieval Roman artist Bernini; called The Rape of Proserpina . Based on a hymn to Demeter by Homer; A story about Demeter experiencing the loss of her daughter, Persephone, as she is taken from her by Ruler of the Underworld, Hades. Hades, tricking Persephone with a flower that she plucked from the ground making it crumble underneath her, whisks her off in his chariot, taking her to be his bride. This statue shows a point in the story where Hades captures Persephone from her in the meadow. I enjoy looking at Bernini's work, one that I like in particular is based on the myth of Apollo and Daphne. His work is quite beautiful and a lot of it often looks so realistic with all of the details that he takes into account. However, in the case of this piece of work, his attention to detail and realism, I feel, makes this statue almost scary.  Displayed on Persephone's face is sheer fear as she tries to use her hands to push H...

Think Pink!!!

Image
I am a very indecisive person. Often times, having a hard time choosing favorites of things, such as color. Even though I don't have a favorite color, I feel like there is no denying how good of a color pink is. Pink is pretty in all its shades. It can go with any other color flawlessly. On clothes, in rooms, or even with cars, pink is a beautiful and show stopping color.  Some may feel that pink is a girly, and therefore inferior color to others, but I like to think otherwise. Partly because I feel like just because you like a different color, doesn't mean you have to put down other colors. Also because it makes me upset that many things that girls grow up doing, liking, or are pushed onto them are frequently seen automatically as lesser than anything that is seen as masculine. I feel like it is also important to mention that pink used to be seen as a masculine color as it derived from red. Red being acquainted with rage, power, royalty, etc. and worn by men because of that,...

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Image
I can't wait for Halloween to come up. I'm trying to figure out what my costume may be; I'm thinking either a princess or the queen of the fairies, like Titania. The princess costume doesn't come from anything specific, however Titania comes from a play by Shakespeare's called A Midsummer Night's Dream. One of which I would love to see in a theater if ever possible. Set in a forest, the vibes of the play is very mystical and magical. And every time I see the costumes from plays, movies, ballet performances, etc. they always look so beautiful. You can probably tell from past blog posts, but I enjoy things that make me feel like they aren't real and look like they could be from a fairy tale. Things that seem magical make me feel good, where everything else around me often makes me feel stressed or overwhelmed. There are many different examples of things or stories that make me feel magical, no just this one. For instance, Alice in Wonderland, Grimm's fairy...

Jeepers Creepers: A History of Halloween!

Image
Now that it is October, the next holiday coming up that people are getting ready to celebrate is Halloween. People are starting to decorate their spaces, and talking about what costumes they're going to wear. As an anthropology major, it makes me wonder, what are the true origins of Halloween, and how did it become what we celebrate today. Apparently, Halloween comes from an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced 'sow-in') in Ireland the United Kingdom, and Northern France. It was celebrated on October 31st, the night before their new year, November 1st, which marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter, a time where people often died the most. It was believed that on October 31st that the boundary between the living and dead became blurred and that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. The Celts would have a celebration by huge bonfires that were built by the Druids (priests) where everyone would wear costumes made of animal heads and skins while a...

I ♡ New York

Image
Lately I've been thinking about what it may be like to move to ew York City. It's been happening pretty frequently for the past few years. Originally, when I was thinking of what schools to apply to , I was trying to take into account what type of area I'd like to live in. Considering the possibility of me staying in that area, probably for the rest of my life. I felt like New York would probably be the best option for me personally as you don't need a drivers license to get around, there is snow during the winter holidays, and it is a city environment, which I am used to. The only issue that made me iffy on the decision was how expensive it would be living there, as well as the fact that I didn't know what I wanted to major in at the time. I was kind of paralyzed by the option and the potential prospects that could go wrong. Now that I've officially made my decision of what school I'm going to, I'm sort of just left wondering what my life would be like...
